About Petra

Petra Haden was born on October 11, 1971 in Manhattan. She is one third of the triplet daughters born to Charlie Haden. The other two thirds are Rachel and Tanya. She also has one brother, Josh When she was eight years old she saw a little girl playing violin on The Captain Kangaroo Show, and decided she wanted to do that too. She started violin lessons, Rachel started piano lessons, and Tanya started cello lessons.

She joined That Dog when she saw her sister Rachel and a friend, Anna Waronker practicing songs in Rachel's bedroom. They asked her if she wanted to be in the band, and so she joined them. The only instrument they could think on for her to play was the violin. The three girls then added Tony Maxwell to the band to play drums. Their first release was a self titled album in 1994, their second was Totally Crushed Out! in 1995, and their most recent was Retreat From the Sun in 1997. They broke up in September 1997. More information about That Dog is available here.

Petra's first solo album, Imaginaryland, was released in 1996. It is mostly her la-la-la-ing. I love it. All songs are by her except Watermark (by Enya), Bach: Prelude No.2 in C minor (for well-tempered voice) (by Bach), Song For The Whales (by Charlie Haden), and Miranda Sex Garden Song (by Miranda Sex Garden). More information about this album is here.
